Indira Nehru Gandhi
Indira was born on November 19, 1917 and would be one child of Nehru Gandhi. She grew up in a strong political community. Her grandfather was a famous Indian Nationalist leader. Her father was not only an important in the Indian independence movement but also one of the most famous members of the Indian National Congress and the first prime minister of Independent India.Her way to power and politics started when she was twelve years old. She had established the monkey division (Brigade), an organization of 1,000 children who spied on the unsuspecting British.She was the first and to date only female prime minister of India.
In 1941, she became involved in the Indian movement after coming from Oxford University. Indira served as adviser and personal assistant of her father. In 1942, she married journalist feroze Gandhit. She got two sons with him.
Later in 1959, Indira became the fourth woman elected president of the Indian National Congress. After her father’s death, she was the prime minister of India. As prime Minister, she most importantly encouraged the making of inexpensive radios and started a family planning program.
In 1967, became one of the first women ever elected to lead a democracy. In 1971, Indira was re-elected by campaigning with the slogan (motto) 'war on poverty’. India sent its first satellite into space. However in 1975, she was found flat of violation’s election laws. Also to control population growth, she started a voluntary sterilization program.
As a result enemies criticized and her administration in general. On June 26, 1975, Indira declared a state of emergency which limited the personal freedom of Indians because of strong riots. Also, she ordered the arrests of the main opposition leaders. In her opinion, her dictator ship was for the good of India But she allowed free elections in 1977.
She regained her position as prime minister in 1980. Unfortunately on October 31, 1984, Indira’s Sikh bodyguards assassinated her when she was 67. Sikhs hated the way she had handled the uprising. They did to take revenge the storming of the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Indira had ordered the storming in June because of what her government thought terrorist activity of extreme Sikhs who had occupied the Temple.
As prime minister, Indria tried to improve the lives of Indians. With her neighbors, the Soviet Union and China, she improved relations. She also promoted science and technology. Economically, Indira led India to become one of the fastest growing economies in the world toward the end of her time as prime minister.
